Dear Families,
Term 4 is always a time of anxious moments and memorable events as we work through the closing stages of the school year. Our Year 12 students are in the final weeks of their secondary school journey as this is their final week of formal classroom lessons. Next week they begin external exams, along with every other Year 12 student across Australia. Our College wishes all year 12 students the best for the gruelling weeks ahead and I challenge them to stay focussed and resilient to finish strongly.
Mercy Mass
Last week our whole school Mass was devoted to Our Lady of Mercy, to recognise our Sisters of Mercy charism. Our Lady of Mercy responds to the needs of those who cry out to her for help. As a school, we pray to Mary for her protection as a sign of our love and devotion as we strive for justice for all. It was an honor to have Sister Nina Barra join us as we recognised the contributions of all before her.
As part of the Mercy Mass tradition, we performed the official handover ceremony from the outgoing student leaders to the newly elected students who will lead our College into 2024. At the start of the next school year, we will hold the official badge ceremony and induct all Year 12 students as they deliver their pledges for the year ahead.
Vaccinations
In 2024, Year 10 students will be offered free vaccination to protect against meningococcal strains A, C, W, and Y and now meningococcal B through the Queensland School Immunisation Program (SIP).
Next year, parents of Year 10 students will receive a pack containing an information sheet about both meningococcal vaccines and a consent form which needs to be returned to the College. Students will not be vaccinated unless a signed consent form has been returned
More information can be found at:

Awards Night
Last night, we hosted our annual College Awards Ceremony, where we recognised, rewarded and celebrated outstanding student academic achievements. The evening was a chance to recognise students for their commitment and dedication to their studies and honour the contribution of students across all year levels. Congratulations to all award recipients and their families. This is always a fantastic celebration of our students, and it was wonderful to see so many of you there.
God bless
Kevin Barnes

Queensland Mental Health Week Rugby League 9’s:
On Friday the 13th of October our future Open’s Rugby League male and female teams drove to Townsville to partake in the annual Queensland Mental Health Week 9’s carnival. Gilroy joined nine other schools from across the diocese at the carnival vying for the QMHW shield.
Our girl's team was successful in their first match against Ryan Catholic College winning 10-8. But then went on to lose their next two matches against Columba Catholic College and St Marget Mary’s in close margins.
Our boy's team was unsuccessful in their first two matches against Good Shepherd Mount Isa and Ryan Catholic College, although they showed a lot of grit and class. The boys turned things around for their final match against Burdekin Catholic High School 16-4.
A thank you must go out to Ryan Catholic College for hosting a great event and of course to our players who represented their college with pride and certainly enjoyed the experience.
Will Murdoch Shield
The Gilroy U15s competed in the annual Will Murdoch Shield at the GSMC fields against St Teresa's College and Ingham State High School. Our boys played with all the hearts and souls, in memory of their friend Will.
Unfortunately, GSMC went down to St Teresa's in a brilliant game of rugby league, demonstrating the values of teamwork and courage in a manner which we are sure would have made Will proud.
Thank you to the Murdoch family for their support, and to all those who participated.
Year 9 HASS
On Monday 16th October, the Year 9 students went on an excursion for HASS to learn about the different types of sustainable tourism within out local community. They interacted with multiple areas, learning the social, historical, economic, environmental and cultural aspects of tourism and ow we can promote out community to ensure its prosperity in years to come. Students viewed #thehinchinbrookway videos at the JL Kelly Theatre and learned about sustainable tourism from the Hinchinbrook Shire Council, meandered dow the historic Mercer Lane, viewed the environmental landscape of Forrest each, engaged in a cultural yarn with Miss Shaq at 5 Mile Creek and finished of at the Cardwell Lookout where they viewed the amazing Hinchinbrook Channel and Island.
