Fun Run
Engineering
Students in Engineering have been involved in the manufacturing of some real life projects, including a number of jump stands for the Ingham Pony Club and a flat top trailer. Well done to Clinton Forden for his hard work and dedication. Clinton was responsible for most of the work and assistance with these jobs whilst on work experience in our Trade Training Centre.

Pongling
The Challenge: Create a PONGLE device that automatically PINGS a PONG between one PADDLE to another. The more PONGS, the more points achieved.
Gamers @ Gilroy
On Saturday evening Gamers @ Gilroy trialled the first gamers' evening. This time, we had consoles and computers all in the one room. We had a good number of gamers with PCs, Playstations and Xboxes turn up and it was great to see some new faces.
A huge thank you to Dean Bolton from ‘Player 2', the new computer store in town, supporting the event and
supplying two lucky door prizes. These were drawn at 7pm and the winners were Anthony Reitano and Callym Hill.
Anthony scored a cool T-shirt and Callym, a gamer's cap.
There were some great rounds of Call of Duty, Black Ops 2 played and a few players got into Team Fortress 2. Overall, it was a great night and the general consensus was to keep it as an evening event.
Stay tuned for another gamers' night early in term 4.
- Seth Shoubridge giving the evening two thumbs up.
- Anthony Reitano with his new shirt and Callym Hill with his cap
- M7 turned into a gamers' room with Karl Modra and Seth approving.
- Samuel DiBartolo and Brendan Bogotto on the PS4
Cricket Revival
Do you have any unused cricket gear in good condition? Would you like to donate it to the school, so that we can get cricket back on its stumps? Please contact Peter Groundwater if you can help out. Many thanks.
From the Principal
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community
Over the past few weeks our Leadership Team have had the pleasure of conducting a number of enrolment interviews. Most of the interviews have been for next year’s enrolments and it is pleasing to share that we have over fifty new enrolments so far in Yr 7 alone. We have many Lourdes and St Peter’s children but also many from our local State schools. We have been really impressed with the children we have interviewed and know that they will make a wonderful contribution to our school for many years to come.
This Friday, we have our Fun Run at Forrest Beach. It really is a great day with games and activities and a walk/run along Forrest Beach. We also will be conducting our Gilroy Triathlon where we have over ten teams participating. The concluding run leg of the triathlon will coincide with the Fun Run so it only adds to the atmosphere on the day. I ask that families don’t see this day as a chance for an early holiday and support this community and character building event. It does take considerable effort to complete the trek along the beach, but I firmly believe that best feeling you can have is the satisfaction of completing (or trying to complete) something that is hard. Special thanks to our P&F who are sponsoring the day including transport, food and drinks for everyone.
During these holidays members of our school community will be travelling to the Poor of Heart Mercy Mission in Naga City, The Philippines. Mrs Timms along with nine of our students will join students from Abergowrie College, Fr Damian and local parishioners to do great work for the poor and underprivileged people of the Mission. It will be a great experience for all concerned, an experience of giving to others like no other. We wish them a great time and I thank them for their commitment to a great cause. I thank everyone in our community who has supported our missionaries and also given to the Mercy Mission of Naga City.
I take this time to wish three of our staff all the best as they take leave in Term 4. Firstly, Ms Megan McQuade, our School Counsellor recently began twelve months maternity leave as she awaits the birth of her first child. Her husband, Mr Andrew Hill will also be taking leave in Term 4 to enjoy the experience of a new addition to their family. Also taking twelve months maternity leave is Mrs Cassy Venturato who is expecting the birth of her and husband Gayden’s second child. I’m sure you will join me in wishing these couples God’s blessings.
A safe and happy holidays to students and staff, remembering that school begins on Tuesday 4 October as Monday is a public holiday. Hopefully we will be celebrating another Cowboys Grand Final win during the holidays.
God Bless
John Nuttall
From the Assistant Principal
(Religious Education)
It is amazing how time flies and how fast this term has gone by. It has been such a busy term and I know everyone is looking forward to a well-earned break.
We farewell two staff members anticipating the arrival of babies. I would like to wish Mrs Cassandra Venturato and Ms Megan McQuade (and hubby Mr Hill) many blessings and I especially look forward to visits and cuddles next term.
As you are reading this students and adults involved in the mission trip will be making last minute preparations. We have done the work in readiness for the trip and now are ready to do God’s work. Father Damian will be celebrating a Commissioning Mass on Friday at 5:00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us and see us off on our journey. Please continue to pray for us while we are over in The Philippines and follow us on our blog.
http://imt2016.blogspot.com
God who calls us and who sends
us,
as our young missionaries prepare for their journey,
we ask that you protect and guide them.
May their minds be open to the new cultures they encounter.
May their hands be helpful and humble in service.
May their eyes see your presence in everyone they meet.
Help them to grow in love for You and one another
not only on each day of this journey,
but every day until the end of days.
This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 25 September. This year, the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘A Place at the Table: Social justice in an ageing society’. The Statement celebrates the value and dignity of older people in Australian life. It challenges us to recognise their significant contribution to society and emphasises that this contribution should not be valued in mere economic terms. The Statement calls for justice for those who are most vulnerable and warns about a view of older people as burdensome or dispensable. For further details about the Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website (link below) or call (02) 8306 3499.
http://www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all next term.
Bless you
Christine Timms
From the Assistant Principal
(Pastoral Care)
As the end of term draws near, my thoughts are with the students and staff who have selflessly volunteered to attend this year’s Mission Trip in the Philippines. What a great advertisement as human beings these people are. For those who are unaware of the extreme hardship that this group will endure, please be assured that this is definitely no sight-seeing tourist type event. This is a hands-on lesson in what life is not like in Australia. There is no respite for the people of this country and the poverty and daily struggle is merely a small snapshot of what their entire life may well be like. Yet through all of the struggle, hardship and never-ending cycle of poverty, these beautiful people still have the capacity to smile and engage with outsiders like our Missionaries in a manner that is both heart-warming and humbling. From listening to stories from past Mission Trip people, one story stands out in my mind. This person said that as the days went on, it was a common saying amongst the group that, “we went over to help them, but in the end they helped us”. I wish all of our Mission Trippers a safe and rewarding journey and I look forward to being a much better prayer partner to Georgia Groundwater than I was to Dan McShea in 2014.
Week 1 of Term 4 will see our Year 11’s attend their annual Leadership Camp at Echo Creek near Tully. This camp is being facilitated by Luke McKenna’s, Unleashing Personal Potential team and will focus on leadership and related aspects of Growth Mindset. One challenge that I would like to extend to all Year 11’s is to consider placing their names forward for leadership positions. Over the last couple of years many students have opted out of this process due to concerns about study and work commitments. Ironically, those who have attained various leadership positions have, in the end, been able to master the juggling act of service and study and have gone onto achieve their desired OP’s or other professional employment outcomes. While Year 12 can be a stressful and difficult time, it is also a time when the distractions away from study and work are ultimately what gets students through the year in a successful and meaningful manner. If any student has concerns about applying for positions I would encourage them to speak to myself or Mr Nuttall.
Finally, with the holidays just around the corner, please enjoy the break and have a happy and safe two weeks.

Squash
As part of a unit on racquet skills and racquet sports, 7B have been visiting the squash courts to practice squash, racquetball and other games. With a mix of modified games, students have been playing variations on tennis and squash in the squash courts. The advantage to this is the guaranteed return of the ball (something not guaranteed in a tennis court). In addition to racquetball and squash, students have also been playing tote tennis and table tennis.
