Yr 10 Senior Schooling Information Evening
Hello Parents/Carers
The current Yr 10 students in Queensland will experience a brand new senior schooling structure in 2019. This new structure is being branded the "New Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) System" by the QCAA.
Here at Gilroy, we have been preparing for this change for a couple of years now and we would like to present the latest information of how the "New QCE System" will look and operate at our school.
A Yr 10 Senior Schooling Information Evening will be conducted next Wednesday 1 August from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the Function Room. Some very important information will be shared especially the new subject offerings, structures and assessment expectations. I hope all parents/carers and students can attend.
Cultural Day 2018
Last week the Yr 7’s participated in the 2018 Cultural Day.
Sleepout for Homelessness
Did you know that, on any given night in Australia 1 in 200 people are homeless: 56% are male; 44% female.
Dear Parents and Students of Gilroy Santa Maria College
The Young Vinnies group are organising a Sleepout for Homelessness which will be held on Friday 3 August. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness whilst raising funds to assist with the cause. We aim to increase our understanding, if only a little, by sleeping rough for just one evening.
The Sleepout will be held in the area adjoining the Presbytery (Father Damian’s home) and will commence at 5:30pm with an official ceremony at 6:00pm. Students should bring a sleeping bag and dress appropriately for the cool weather. We will rely on the goodness of the community to bring us some dinner which will be a simple meal consisting of soup and bread rolls. The Sleepout will finish with a light breakfast at 7:00am on Saturday. Students will be ready to be collected by 7:30am.
If you would like to provide a soup or some bread rolls, we would be very appreciative. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any further queries or concerns.
Peer Support
The Peer Support Breakup was held on the last day of Term Two. Thank you to all our Peer Support Leaders! They took their role very seriously and put a lot of effort into the organisation of their lessons. Here are some comments and photos from some of our 2018 Peer Support Leaders.
Peer Support Leaders Comments:
I thoroughly enjoyed the Peer Support Program. The role was more challenging than I expected because creating lessons that were engaging, fun and on topic was sometimes difficult. Mary G
From this experience I learned that being a leader was not just about telling people what to do or leading a country, but rather encouraging others to do their best, persevere and helping others to feel comfortable in a new environment. Eliza C
After coming from a very small school with only 2 students graduating in my year I knew exactly how it felt coming to high school on my own and I wanted to help others find friends for their new journey for the next 6 years of high school. Zara N
I wanted to be a part of peer support this year because I knew it would really benefit me and help me grow as a person. Rachel T

Food Technology Department
Term 2 finished off with some delicious foods being created in the food tech department. Yr 10 students finished off their yeast cookery unit with making pizzas from scratch and finished designing their own "tear and share" loafs.
Yr 8 students made a delicious chicken stir fry which students enjoyed immensely.
Our Yr 9 students finished the term by cooking delicious hot "zeppole" Italian donuts dusted with icing sugar, they were amazing!
Our Yr 7 students learnt how to make a scrumptious Mac and Cheese recipe from which they all enjoyed so much, they were all going to recreate it over the holidays!
Below are some inspiring kitchen pictures from last term.
Foodies Club
This semester, a “Foodies Club” is going to start at Gilroy looking at healthy and sustainable Food and Gardening activities delivered by Ms Mastrippolito and Ms Coyle.
Students will look at scientific ways to boost health using easy recipes, growing your own herbs and vegetables and looking at the evolving science and fostering of, “Gut Health”. Much of the recent studies done on our Gut Health and Microbiomes, suggests that making healthy food choices increases our overall health and immunity as well as our mood. Some families may have seen this topic on lots of shows including Insight on SBS and ABC.
Many unpleasant foods can disrupt our microbiomes affecting our overall wellbeing. We set out to make small changes to start going back to basics with food, growing foods and getting back into the kitchen. Our club will also look at positive websites, apps, social media cooking pages and food personalities. Students will work on making things like, sauces and spice mixes to sell nearing Christmas, to prevent unwanted gifts going into landfill and giving a gift made with love, and one that nourishes our taste buds and health.
Each newsletter, we will provide families with one easy recipe to make at home and help with our busy lifestyles to ensure we are still cooking healthy meals. Students will also decide on a gardening tip to feature in the weekly newsletter.
Happy cooking, Happy Gardening!
Ms Mastrippolito & Ms Coyle.

Wholemeal flour uses the wheatgerm- this contains protein and healthy fats vital for energy and concentration in the classroom. - Melt butter; add to wet ingredients and stir to combine.
- Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients just until moist.
- In a separate, small bowl, mix together walnuts and brown sugar for the topping.

JCU Experience Day
Yr 12’s enjoyed the JCU Experience Day last Friday. JCU Ambassadors, Harjyot and Narjyot Gill who are both past Gilroy students caught up with the current Yr 12’s.
Wearable Art
Yr 10 Visual Art students at Gilroy Santa Maria College were very busy in term 2 designing eye-catching pieces as part of their Wearable Art unit. The student’s creations were inspired by experiences in their life that they felt had significant purpose and generated an emotive response. These areas ranged from the beauty and endless joy of new life through to the growth of flowers, the excitement of opening up presents on special occasions, along with reliving the fun of childhood days. Designs also exploring more serious issues such as the viciousness and sadness that can be present in the world today. All designs were produced from recycled materials, including newspapers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, craft paper and toy donations. A big thank you to Mrs Pietrobon who guided the student through their work from start to finish.
QISSN
This year for QISSN 2018 we travelled to Townsville with our coach Miss Castellaro and our manager Ros. This year the competition expanded to 64 teams. Our team was in Division 5 and because of the number of teams participating in the carnival there was a total of 8 divisions. So, for us, being one of the smaller schools in the competition we were graded quite high.
Monday morning, we were up bright an early as we travelled to Charters Towers to watch the Confro boys play their first game. It was a quick trip as we had to be back to play our first game at 1. We played 3 games and unfortunately didn’t come away with any wins.
Tuesday, we played another 2 games and unfortunately again we were defeated. Although it was disheartening to not have won any games, we were all giving our best which is all that matters.
On Wednesday we turned up at the courts with many supporters on the sideline to cheer us on. This may have been the reason we came away with our first win! It gave us a boost of confidence. The boys then turned up for our last game to watch us play Ryan Catholic College who defeated us in a great game. The Confro boys, as well as us QISSN girls, together with St Teresa’s Abergowrie boys enjoyed a BBQ lunch at the strand. Following our lunch date, we went to Launch Zone for a fun afternoon.
Thursday then saw all teams being separated into different divisions based on their placings. We played our first game in division 6 against Mercy College, Mackay. Again, there was a sea of supporters. We knew we had to give them a game to remember and by pulling together as a team that is exactly what we did coming away with another win! This then followed with a loss in the second game which resulted in us playing for 3rd or 4th in our division on Friday.
Friday, we fought hard and played well but lost in a nail biting grand final against Rockhampton Girls Grammar by a narrow margin of 2. This placed us 4th in Division 6 for QISSN 2018.
Although we were presented with some challenging games throughout the week we stayed true to the Gilroy spirit by giving it our all. It was certainly a week to remember and we take this opportunity on behalf of the 2018 QISSN team to thank Miss Castellaro and Ros for their patience, hard work and dedication. We look forward to a new year of netball in 2019, filled with motivation, dedication and a willingness to succeed.

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community
Welcome back to Term 3, a ten-week term that promises to be another busy one.
The busyness started last week with Yr 9’s camping for four days at a cattle property near Ravenshoe, some of our Yr 12’s experienced the benefits of placement in many workplaces throughout our district, while others prepared for the upcoming QCS Test. Also, our Yr 7’s experienced a tremendous Indigenous Cultural Day last Friday to cap off a rapid beginning to the term.
It doesn’t stop this week, with many of our students attending the annual Catholic Education Mulkadee Arts Festival. Our students along with hundreds of students from Catholic Schools in the Townsville Diocese are experiencing a variety of artistic workshops delivered from some of the best artistic tutors and teachers in the country. Their week will culminate this Friday night when they perform in the Concert Finale at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. We wish them all the best.
All these activities are again a tremendous advertisement for the commitment and energy of our staff here at Gilroy Santa Maria College. There was much time spent organising and planning and I take this opportunity to thank everyone involved, as I have heard nothing but positive reports about how much the students enjoyed their respective activities.
I was thrilled to attend the Rugby League and Netball Confraternity Carnivals in Charters Towers and Townsville respectively during the school holidays. Both teams performed well, and I was proud to be cheering them on as both teams demonstrated tremendous sportsmanship and were great ambassadors for our College. Again, thanks to our tireless staff members who gave up the first week of their holidays to look after our teams.
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic Schools to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. During the week we are reminded that “Catholic Education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.” We will be celebrating Catholic Education Week with a combined Hinchinbrook Catholic Schools Mass next Monday morning, additionally we will be sending representatives to the Diocesan Mass in Townsville on Tuesday 31 July.
Also, next week we have an important information evening for current Yr 10 parents and students regarding Senior Schooling. As mentioned previously, the current Yr 10 students in Queensland will experience a brand new senior schooling structure in 2019. This new structure is being branded the "New Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) System" by the QCAA. Here at Gilroy, we have been preparing for this change for a couple of years now and we will be presenting the latest information of how the "New QCE System" will look and operate at our school. The Information Evening will be conducted next Wednesday 1 August from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the Function Room. Some very important information will be shared especially the new subject offerings, structures and assessment expectations. I hope all our Yr 10 parents/carers and students will attend.
This Friday we farewell and thank Brendan Spina who has resigned to take up another opportunity in our district and also Karen Lahtinen who begins maternity leave. Both Karen and Brendan contributed greatly to our staff and will be sorely missed by our community. We especially wish Karen all the best with the upcoming birth of her first child. Because of these departures we welcome back Claude Cianciullo to our teaching staff and also to Tiffany Ellis, who joins our Learning Enrichment Team. Carina Venturato will be Acting Yr 11/12 Pastoral Leader during Karen’s maternity leave.
A reminder to families that the Yr 6 Transition Day is being held next week on Thursday 2 August from 8:30am-11:30am.
God Bless

From the Acting Assistant Principal
(Administration & Curriculum)
Welcome back to Term 3.
Week 1 of Term 3 certainly jolted everyone back into school mode. Yr 9 headed to Woodleigh Station for an Outdoor Education Camp, the smiles on their faces indicated some true enjoyment. Yr 12 OP eligible students undertook QCS practice testing and a JCU Experience Day while the non OP students went to work experience. Yr 7 enjoyed Cultural Day on Friday and the feedback was very rewarding. I’d like to thank students for making the most of these activities and thank all our Staff who put in a lot of time and effort organising these events.
Yr 12 QCS Testing:
In relation to Yr 12 QCS Practice, students’ papers have been sent away for marking. In coming weeks students will receive individualised feedback comments that they can work on improving. This will be the final set of QCS Practice testing that students will complete prior to the actual QCS test on Tuesday 4 September and Wednesday 5 September this term. Students will continue to have their QCS preparation lesson until their QCS Exams to ensure they are as prepared and confident as they can be. Practice makes perfect!
Yrs 11 and 12 OP Predictions:
All OP eligible students will be meeting with our Careers Advisor, Mrs Nancy Douglas, and myself in the next few weeks to discuss how students are tracking academically and, for Yr 12 students, planning for life after school. Parents/Guardians will be advised of these times and are encouraged and welcome to be present at these meetings.
Assessment Planners:
Students in Yrs 7-9 have received a hard copy and students in Yrs 10-12 have received an emailed copy with all parents having received an email copy of the Assessment Planner. Please ensure that your child refers to the assessment calendar and is organised with their required work.
Reports:
All students’ reports should have arrived at homes. These can also be accessed on COMPASS. I would like to congratulate students who have tried their best and received results that they are proud of. It does take a lot of time and determination to perform your best and hopefully this will be paid off when students are able to pursue the life and career pathways they want when they finish school. Any issues with subjects or results should be attended to immediately. Please call or email the teacher concerned or myself.
Ongoing Commitment:
I was very disappointed to hear some students and parents state that once exams are completed that there is no need to attend school. Schools have 40 weeks to teach and assess a very full curriculum. Holidays do not start when exams are completed. Every school day is important and there is never a rest day in the school calendar! As we enter into the new Senior Schooling, this is more important than ever before. To emphasize this, the College asks Parents to advise when students are absent from school and to provide a medical certificate if a student is unable to sit and exam. I cannot stress enough how important it is for students to attend school on every school day in order to attain the full benefit of each aspect of the curriculum.
As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or email jdevietti@gilroysm.catholic.edu.au
I hope that everyone has a great term.
God Bless
Joan Devietti
From the Assistant Principal
(Religious Education)
Welcome back to Term 3. I trust you all had a relaxing break from the busyness of school. This term is shaping up to be another fun-filled, packed couple of months.
Our Diocese is celebrating Catholic Education Week from 29 July to 4 August. This year’s theme is: Discovering New Horizons and has been aligned with the official Year of Youth theme for 2018. In a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2016 he called young people and the Church to ‘open new horizons for spreading joy’:
My friends, Jesus is the Lord of risk, he is the Lord of the eternal “more”. Jesus is not the Lord of comfort, security and ease. Following Jesus demands a good dose of courage, a readiness to trade in the sofa for a pair of walking shoes and to set out on new and uncharted paths. To blaze trails that open up new horizons capable of spreading joy, born of God’s love and wells up in your hearts with every act of mercy.
Catholic Education Week is a state-wide event that promotes the distinctive mission of Catholic schools throughout Queensland. The week is celebrated by all schools through a range of activities, liturgies and events. Each of the catholic schools in the district will be attending a Combined Schools Mass on Monday, 30 July at 9:30am at St Patrick’s Church. Our Prefects, Yr 7 classes, as well as the Gilroy ensemble group and choir, will be in attendance. As always, it promises to be a beautiful event. Everyone is welcome to join us.
On Tuesday our school captains will be representing the college at the Catholic Education Week Mass held in Townsville. Every year each school nominates a senior student who is committed to Christian living through their involvement in the Church and the school community, how they interact and treat others, their commitment to the Gospel Values and their generosity of spirit. This year Gilroy’s nominee for the Deus Caritas Est Award is Emma Panzenbock. Emma will be presented with a plaque, medal and money to be given to a charity of her choice. Congratulations to Emma and her family.
In the next school holidays our school will be sending ten students and three staff members off to the Philippines for the Mission Trip. The students are Jalanda Bright, Aden Comas, Emily Firth, Mary Galletly, William Hardy, Ethan Hillyard, Allanis Melvin, Anthony Reitano, Matthew Timms and Rachel Torrisi accompanied by Linley Cerqui, Tony Giliberto, Father Damian and myself. During our time there, we will be working alongside the Missionaries of the Poor and assisting with the care of the abandoned old people and disabled children in their care.
Leading up to our departure, the students and their families will be involved in fundraising to help them get there. We have some events coming up and raffles tickets for sale (see flyers attached below). We will keep you up to date throughout the term. Please support us in any way you can.
God Bless

Over the first week of the school holidays I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the annual Confraternity Rugby League Carnival in Charters Towers, as well and the QISSN Netball carnival in Townsville. Both events are ‘must do’ events in our school’s sporting calendar and are an opportunity for our students to be a part of the much bigger world of sport in Queensland. Like our players, the idea of going to Charters Towers for a week was not one of the most sort after things that I really wanted to do on the first week of the holidays. Add to this, the disappointment of three players suddenly becoming unavailable to tour on the last week of school and we had the makings of a potential disaster. How wrong I was. Like former Australian Cricket Captain, Steve Waugh, who was affectionately dubbed the ‘patron saint of lost causes’, I dragged myself to the bus on Sunday morning with a somewhat ‘fake’ smile on my face, praying that I could meet the next round of challenges that we were likely to face over the next 6 days. Thankfully, I will look back on this week of Confro and QISSN, not as a disaster, but as one of the best weeks of school sport that I have been associated with.
With the help of some fantastic young men from Columba Catholic College and Ryan we able to not only have some welcome reserves, but to compete to a standard that we were all very proud of. While we didn’t come home with our first piece of silverware or even a bowl or a cup, we did manage to highlight what a fantastic group of students we have at Gilroy Santa Maria College. Attitude plays a big role in our life’s fortunes. I am very pleased to say that if these fine group of men can impart only a small part of the attitude that they displayed while away then they all have very big futures awaiting them. From a Rugby League perspective, not once did we hear a complaint, not once did we have to complain about the players. Their efforts, their attitudes and their behaviour were nothing short of exemplary. I congratulate all of these young men on their efforts on and off the field and I hope that they found the tour of Confro 2018 as enjoyable as us staff members did. A big thank you must go to the Coach, Ian Schifilliti and the assistant coaches, Brendan and Matthew Spina and Aden Mendiolea who were exceptional in promoting a positive and very enjoyable atmosphere amongst the playing group throughout the week. Thanks also goes out to Co-Coach, Paul Dezolt who was unfortunately unable to attend at the last minute.
From a Netball perspective, the geographical distance between Charters Towers and Townsville meant that I couldn’t spend nearly as much time as I wanted watching our Gilroy girls do battle on the court. A massive thanks to Coach Meagan Castellaro and her QISSN compatriot Roslyn Giuliano for all the work that they put into training and coaching the girls through the year and during QISSN. One of the nicest things I have seen in school spirit was the very unexpected arrival of the Gilroy QISSN team at our first game in Charters Towers. This was a really big gesture and probably didn’t set them up well for their games later in the day. On behalf of the Rugby League team, I would like to thank and congratulate Meagan, Roslyn and the girls for this fantastic display of school spirit. Another nice part of the week happened on our Wednesday rest day where Gilroy and Abergowrie were able to bond as Ingham Secondary Catholic Colleges and share a lunchtime meal together. I feel that both Gilroy and Abergowrie have so much to offer each other in terms of collegiality and cultural significance and it would be great to increase our level of association on a more regular basis. Although Confro & QISSN are only for one week of the year, the preparation and execution of these weeks are an enormous undertaking from staff, players and parents. I look forward to celebrating the successes of both teams at our annual presentation dinner in the next few weeks.
Blessings
Peter Groundwater

Careers
Yr 10 Work Experience
During the last week of Term 2, our entire Yr 10 cohort participated in work experience. For some students, attending work experience for the very first time is quite daunting. I was very pleased with how each of them conducted themselves and from all reports, they went very well!
This work experience gives our students a good insight on what area they might like their future careers to be in. The main point I wanted to get across to them is that you do not have to know what career pathway is going to be right now, but we need to start thinking about it. This is what work experience is about, finding out what suits you.
If you child would like to attend any work experience over the school holidays, then they should come and see me in the Careers room.
Yr 11 and Yr 12 Work Placement Continues
Our Friday work placement program for Term 3 is well underway and will continue throughout Term 3 and 4. There will be no work placement on Friday 10 and Friday 24 August due to our Interhouse and Interschool Athletics. It is up to the student to communicate with their workplace if they are not going to attend work placement. In addition to this, if a student cannot attend work placement due to sickness, then the school AND workplace is to be notified.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Calling all parishioners who enjoy knitting and/or crocheting. We are commencing a new program to provide prayer shawls and/ or knee rugs to people in our community who may be in need.
If you love knitting/crocheting and are interested in being part of this program, please contact the Parish Centre for further information. If you are unable to knit/crochet but are keen to help financially, please feel free to donate to assist us to purchase the wool. Also, if anyone has left over wool no longer required, please feel free to drop this off. Any donation will be gratefully appreciated.
