YR 11 LEADERSHIP DAY

From the Acting Principal

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,

Throughout this term, I along with our senior leadership team, have been interviewing numerous students throughout our district who would like to attend our College in 2021. These meetings are always very insightful and an opportunity to better get to know our future students and their families. Our Yr 6 transitions days this year have been well-attended and play a major role in these students becoming comfortable within our College. During these interviews, it is always beautiful to hear students explain how much they enjoy these days because they are able to see how friendly our older students are towards them and see for themselves our students enjoying all the wonderful things our College has to offer. Last Thursday evening, we had our Year 6 Information Night which was well attended. Our senior students took families on a tour around the College where they were able to see the wonderful, authentic and engaging learning experiences our year 7 and 8 students have undertaken throughout this year. Teachers also gave our families an insight into the learning that occurs within the different curriculum areas. We then moved into the SMC where we gave a presentation to our families about what Gilroy offers their child/children throughout their secondary education. As you will also be seeing on our facebook page, we have been ‘opening the doors’ to our classrooms so that our community can see that our classrooms are an inviting and welcoming environment conducive to learning.

Our year 12 students are currently undergoing their mock exams in preparation for their external exams in Term 4. These exams are being scheduled and conducted in a way that mimics how their external exams will operate. Results from these exams will allow subject teachers to determine what area/s of learning need to be revisited to best prepare our students. Once year 12s commence their exams, they will be on ‘block’ which means they will only be required to come into school when they have their exams. Their classroom teachers, up until the day of their scheduled external exam, will be working closely with their class, whether it be through their google classroom page, workshops, schedule times for academic support, to ensure our students are given every opportunity to perform their best in these exams. Students who have minimal exams are being encouraged to take this opportunity to organise work placement in industries that they are wanting to apply for jobs in.

This Friday, we have our College Fun Run at Forrest Beach. This day is always a great day and enjoyed by everyone. It is a day where students can just enjoy the company of their peers after a busy term. I ask that families don’t see this as a chance for an early holiday and support this community and character-building event. Special thanks to our P&F who are sponsoring the day, including transport, food and drinks for everyone.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday to all of our families.

School begins on Tuesday 6 October as Monday 5 October is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday.

God Bless
Melissa Carr
Acting Principal

Acting Assistant Principal Curriculum & Administration

Hello everyone,

As we near the end of Term 3 and the completion of exams, I would like to congratulate students on their efforts towards their exams. Students who were absent for exams in Yrs 7-10 may need to catch up these exams next term. They will need to ensure that they see their teacher during the first week of Term 4. Students in Years 11 and 12 who missed any exams must present a medical certificate to cover their absence.

On the final day of the term we have the Annual School Fun Run. Students will have assembly under S block to commence the day before being transported to Forrest Beach for their walk and activities for the rest of the day. Students will arrive back at school by 3:00pm for buses. This has traditionally been a great day, enjoyed by all our students and I hope to see everyone. It is an excellent way to end the term with friends at the beach!

The year 6 Information Night and school tour was held on September 10. This allowed the families of the 2021 Year 7 students to admire our state of the art facilities and gain a glimpse of a student’s life at our college. It was a great night. I encourage all families who have new enrolments for 2021 to please call student reception as soon as possible for an interview so that the organization of the new year can be done.

Year 11 Leadership Day was held last Friday. Thank you to Father Damian and Staff who attended. It was great to hear that the students eagerly participated and are keen to lead the College positively in the new year.

Year 10 SET Planning interviews are continuing into Term 4. If you have not completed this mandatory interview and have not made an interview time, please call Student Reception or go to COMPASS to do so.

Year 8 will choose 2 electives to continue with in years 9 & 10. Students will be asked to select these electives early in Term 4. Please discuss with your child which electives they may have interest in.

The elective options are:

  • Visual Arts – 09VAR.01
  • Performing Arts – 09PAR.01
  • Design Technology – 09DT.01
  • Engineering & Construction Technology – 09ECT.01
(Certificate II Manufacturing Pathways in Year 10)
  • Food Technology -09FT.01
(Independent Living Skills in year 10)
  • Digital Technology – 09ICT.01
  • Italian – 09ITA-.01
  • Economics & Business– 09EAB.01

I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable break.

God Bless

Assistant Principal (Religious Education)

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community

Welcome to the last week of the term. Looking around I believe that everyone is truly looking forward to the break.

It is very easy to get to the end of the term feeling tired and exhausted and a little frustrated by people’s words and actions. Our fuses are shorter and we tend to say things we might not necessarily mean or usually say. Through our own frustrations it is sometimes hard to forgive those around us for things said or done to us. In the Gospel on Sunday, Peter asks how often he should extend forgiveness to those around him. Peter tries to put a number on it, however, Jesus responds by telling him there should be no quantitative amount. Jesus tells Peter that forgiveness should come from the heart, abundantly and unconditionally. It does not make a difference how many times we do it, but the depth at which it is done. Let us, during these last days of term, be willing to forgive those who do us harm so we can truly be closer to our God.

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of our patron saint, Our Lady of Mercy with a whole school mass. The actual feast day occurs during our holidays on the 24th September. It is always a lovely way to finish off the term, gathered together to honour Mary and invite her to help us love Jesus in the same way she did.

I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all next term.

God bless
Christine Timms
