From the Principal
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College community,
During week 3 we celebrated Catholic Education Week which is acknowledged each year in week 3 of term 3. This year the theme of ‘A Spirited Tomorrow’ was promoted to observe the distinctive mission and ethos of Catholic schools.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of our students and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
A major contributor to student success is school attendance. Whilst our College sets high attendance targets, it is a well known fact that attending school every day affords students the best chance to achieve the outcomes necessary for future success.
Research confirms a strong link between attendance and student outcomes. Poor school attendance can be linked to a number of related short and long-term adverse outcomes for students including lower academic outcomes, early school leaving, substance use, poverty, unemployment and negative health outcomes. A student’s regular absence from school may be a critical indicator in disengagement, leading directly to some adverse outcomes and poor social skills. Poor school attendance, particularly with a high number of unexplained or unauthorised absences, is a readily observable warning sign for potential longer-term adverse outcomes.
I encourage all students and parents to review the latest report card to determine current attendance data on each student. Gilroy Santa Maria attendance data shows good student attendance on Monday through to Thursday, but there is a noticeable decline in attendance rates on Friday each week. This data raises concerns and emphasises a statistic we need to improve upon. The well-used adage that ‘Every Day Counts’ is critical to student learning and student outcomes. We all have a part to play in ensuring our students are at school every day learning and being a part of every opportunity on offer.
The attendance facts for GSM are:
- There have been 111 school days so far in 2021
- GSM average student attendance for 2021 is 90%
- A student who has attended 90% has been absent for 11 days
- The students learning opportunities have been reduced by 10%
Year 7 enrolment interviews for 2022 have begun following our recent Transition Days. A Year 6 Parent information session is being held as part of ‘Gilroy on Show’ on Thursday August 19 for parents of students currently in year 6 who are transitioning to year 7 in 2022. I look forward to meeting with our future students and families and sharing information about what Gilroy Santa Maria College has to offer our students and show case our wonderful facilities.
God bless
Kevin Barnes

GILROY ON SHOW
From the Assistant Principal
(Administration & Curriculum)
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,
I trust that students are busily completing assessment tasks and constantly revising. Revision should never be left for the last few weeks; it should be constant and consistent throughout the term. The second half of the term is always busy with assessment. Term 3 Assessment Planners have been emailed to all parents/carers/ students and should be constantly referred to.
Successful students: Organisation is the key to success. Organise yourself by: Organising your work by:
Year 10 Information Night
“Success in Senior” information night will be held THIS Thursday 12 August at 6.30pm in the SMC. The information delivered during this evening will be vital for all year 10 students and their parents/carers. The evening will include an explanation of the New QCE System as well as guidance on selecting subjects for year 11. Year 11 subject teachers along with our Careers Advisor will also be there on the night and available to talk to students and parents/carers about any questions you have. Each student in year 10 will have a mandatory individual SET (Senior Education and Training) plan interview commencing on Friday 30 September and continuing into the first few weeks of Term 4 to discuss their subject selections.
Year 6 Transition Mornings
It is always great to see Year 6 students visiting our school and enjoying the experience. A reminder to families that our final Yr 6 Transition morning will be held THIS Friday 13 August 8:30am-11:30am.
Gilroy on Show
We also have Gilroy on Show on Thursday 19 August from 5:30pm which will begin with our Yr 6 Parent Information session. This will provide both families and students with important information in preparation for transitioning into secondary school. This evening will be followed by food and entertainment as well as subject displays and tours of our College. We also have prizes for families who attend this evening. I am looking forward to meeting our new families during enrollment interviews in the coming months and at our Orientation day in the final week of school where our enrolled students will experience a day at the College.
God Bless

Assistant Principal Religious Education
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,
It was a lovely celebration of Catholic Education in the Hinchinbrook district during Week 3. Even though it was a smaller affair (one that fitted into St Patrick’s Church), it is still a wonderful opportunity to have all our schools and our kindy kids celebrate together and enjoy what makes us ‘us’.
At the beginning of the year Pope Francis announced a new celebration honouring grandparents and the elderly. This was celebrated on 25th July and will now be celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday in July. Even though we are slightly late, the College would like to extend our blessing to the grandparents of our students and those in our community who continue to support our school. This week’s prayer is dedicated to our terrific grandparents and the elderly.
God bless,
Christine Timms

Careers
Written by JCU Heroes In Sport program participant - Joshua Milani Yr 12.
In June, I was fortunate enough to be 1of the 25 students selected to participate in Heroes of Sport 2021 which was held at the Cowboys Community, Training and High Performance Centre in Townsville. To be considered, Year 11 and 12 students from the Townsville, Ayr, Charters Towers and Ingham districts were invited to complete an application explaining why we were interested in attending the program as well as sharing our passion to study and work in the sport industry. The Heroes in Sport program is a joint collaboration between JCU and the North Queensland Cowboys and enables students to briefly experience what a career in physiotherapy or sport and exercise science would be like.
Heroes in Sport was a half day program packed with activities and presentations. We heard from professionals such as physiotherapists, the Cowboys coaching staff, students in their third year at JCU studying sport and exercise science or physiotherapy as well as JCU lecturers who spoke about the two different courses and the opportunities each course would give us. During the program we were given the opportunity to participate in activities to study and learn about how certain parts of the body work and how information gained is used to improve a player’s performance. We measured our speed, strength and power and compared it to the data already gathered from NRL players. We were also able to use the gym and observe the different roles the Cowboys training staff have within the team.
For anyone that is interested in a career in sport and exercise science or physiotherapy, I would strongly recommend attending the next program.
God Bless
Mrs Louise Costabeber
MAMS Collection
What an amazing effort from the Kings of Collection - Ben Hitchcock, Seth McCaul, Bailey Marini, Michael Russo and William Melvin.
These Grade 10 students worked tirelessly during the Herbert River Jockey Club's Ingham Gold Cup collecting the discarded eligible containers and in turn making a small fortune for themselves. It is fantastic to see such initiative from the young men in our community!
