From the Principal
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College community,
Throughout the past week, we have worked through the process of selecting our College Leaders for 2022. The arduous process required candidates to present a speech to the entire school body, a vote from their fellow students and staff plus being interviewed by a panel. I wish to acknowledge the students who had the courage and commitment to nominate and be considered for positions. It truly was a difficult decision as each candidate submitted a very convincing case as to why they would be worthy of filling positions. Each student and their families should be proud of the manner in which they presented themselves, the pride and passion they displayed and the mature and thoughtful responses they delivered to the interview questions.
I am very confident in saying that Gilroy Santa Maria College is in a very health position when we have students of this quality vying to be our student leaders and pledging to show the way for the entire student body. In Term 4 we will have be having an Assembly where we will handover the leadership positions to the 2022 leaders.
I am pleased to announce the College Leaders for 2022:

Inter-School Athletics
The performances of our students at the recent interschool athletics carnival was another example of the spirit, enthusiasm and desire that is evident in our students. Participation and effort went a long way to ensuring that we took out the majority of the awards on the day. Whilst it was a team effort it was amazing to acknowledge the outstanding personal performances of a number of our students.
Gilroy Santa Maria College took out the following awards:
OVERALL Girls winners
7 Age Champions out of a possible 12
2 District records broken
Age Champions:
Jess Furber
Rocky Jensen
Carly D'Emden
Brayden Spina
Lucy Biviano
Brandon Hamilton-Kaurila
Kate Butcher
RECORDS BROKEN:
Louise & Laura Poggio both broke the District 1500m records in their respective age groups. Great effort girls.
Hair Styles
The start of term 4 will see the introduction of our revised Uniform Guidelines, with particular emphasis on acceptable Hair styles and haircuts. Following a recent review of our Uniform Guidelines, which included consultation with the College Board and P&F Association it was decided the hair policy would be amended as below to outline acceptable hair styles at GSMC:
- Hair should always be clean, neat and tidy. Students are expected to wear their hair in conventional styles and colours, avoiding extremes of fashion.
- Hairstyles should not impede learning or vision (hair over the eyes).
- Unconventional cuts and styles are not acceptable. Examples of unacceptable trends include: dreadlocks, clip-on hair extensions, hair wraps, coloured beading, “Bali-style” braiding/corn rows (unless culturally appropriate), mohawks, mullets, ‘rats tails’, ‘patterns’ or lines cut into the hair.
- Male students
o hair must be above collar length.
o should be clean-shaven. Consideration will be given to cultural traditions. - Female students
o must have their hair tied up if below the collar
o hair ties and accessories must be black, brown or College colours. - Hair colours that the College deems extreme or not natural, including multi-coloured hair, is unacceptable.

Assistant Principal Religious Education
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,
As the end of the term draws near, everyone seems to be knuckling down with assessment tasks and study for the end of term exams. As it all gets a little hectic, please be mindful of others and the stresses that we don’t always know about in their lives. A gentle smile, a g’day or a simple ‘can I help you with anything?’ goes a long way and might be the difference between a good day and a not so good day.
Many hands go into organising youth masses in our parish. Thank you to everyone who helped on the weekend at mass; readers, musicians, choir, people who set up and pack away, the pizza deliverer, the softdrink supplier and Father Damian for celebrating mass.
Next term, during Mission Month, the College will participate in the annual Socktober fundraiser. This year, for a bit of fun, I am asking students to bring in unwanted, old socks and plastic bags to school so that we can use them to make soccer balls, like those used by underprivileged children overseas. This will be a great opportunity for our students to have a better understanding of what it is like to not always have access to things as simple as sports balls.
The prayer this week is the Prayer for Kindness found in our school diary.
Jesus,
help me to live with enthusiasm;
to see a lonely person and to talk to them;
to give a word of encouragement to a struggling student;
to be patient with my friends even when they are wrong;
to donate to charity even though world hunger still exists;
to accept You as my Saviour and to trust You as my friend. Amen.
God bless,
Christine Timms

Building progress
Year 9 Market Day
Last week the Year 9 Economics and Business class held their market day. During the term students were given the opportunity to plan, budget and market their business idea, and then two days to run their business. The students unleashed their creativity and developed a product or service that students and staff at Gilroy might buy. After an exciting two days the students made a profit of $646, which will be donated to their chosen charity 'Meals on Wheels'.
Year 12 80’s Day
On Tuesday the Year 12’s dressed in their best 80’s themed outfits as it was exactly 80 days until their GRADUATION!
From the Assistant Principal (Pastoral)
Dear Families,
It’s that exciting/sad time of year again where we are getting ready to change over our student senior leadership. I have enjoyed working with this year’s leadership group immensely. They have had some great ideas and have been proactive in running events and supporting staff lead activities.
The quality of interviews has been fantastic again this year making it even harder to make a decision. From the quality of responses and the ideas provided by students in the interviews I am really looking forward to working with next years leaders and watching them grow and make a difference to the school.
It can sometimes feel challenging for parents to raise happy, healthy and resilient children and teens. What can help our families and schools is up-to-date resources aimed at providing information on key topics that relate to parenting and the wellbeing of our children.
SchoolTV has partnered with Townsville Catholic Education to deliver ongoing support to parent communities, teachers and school and pastoral support staff. The SchoolTV platform is integral as part of a whole school approach to student wellbeing. It is now available to our parents and families. Each topic or edition addresses key issues using brief interviews with expert specialists, fact sheets, parent quizzes, recommended apps, books and much more.
SchoolTV streamlines and brings together information from many reputable sources such as REACHOUT and beyondblue, Australian Psychological Society, Nutrition Australia, headspace and esafety Commission. This provides a very reliable and accessible resource, saving parents time and confusion searching online across multiple sites.
Dr Michael Carr-Gregg is one of Australia's highest profile psychologists, and a specialist in corporate mental health, families, parenting, children, adolescents, and the use of technology for mental health. The information he provides in this series is invaluable and we hope as parents/carers you take advantage of this excellent resource.
School TV can be accessed by going to the Gilroy Santa Maria Homepage and clicking the link at the top of the website or by going through/Parents/School TV/ Then clicking the “click here” icon. Or if you follow the below link.
