2021 Annual Awards Night
Location: SMC
When: Junior Year 7-9 Ceremony 6:00pm
Senior Year 10-12 Ceremony 7:30pm

From the Principal

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College community,

Term 4 has begun in full flight with a number of very important events occurring with several more ceremonies happening in the coming days.

During week 1, Fr Damian blessed the leadership badges before they were presented to the 2022 Student Leaders. Our wonderful students who will lead the student body through the next twelve months commenced their time as leaders. I look forward to working closely with these students as they fulfil there duties and display there ability to provide guidance, direction and opportunities for all students.

The first of our formalities to recognise student achievement was held at the Sports Awards ceremony where we acknowledged our outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen and announced age champions, record breakers and North Queensland representatives. I was in awe to see so many talented and dedicated young adults who proudly represented the College, Herbert River, NQ and Queensland and strived to produce personal best efforts whenever they compete.

The Will Murdoch Perpetual Shield was launched as a round robin rugby league competition for under 13 players between St Theresa’s College, Ingham State High and Gilroy Santa Maria College in memory of our much-honoured student who was taken way to soon.

The event which will become an annual carnival between the three schools, displayed outstanding sportsmanship and competitiveness from all players which was a perfect reflection of how Will led his life and approached the game of rugby league.

To mark the occasion, Jonny Pearce penned the following poem which perfectly sums up Will’s love of life and competitive nature.

The Will Murdoch Perpetual Shield

Today we start a great event, a gift from Willy, heaven sent,
So if you break and score a try, be sure to look up to the sky,
Where Willy is watching from a cloud, the brightest angel, beaming proud.

Young Will was magic on the ball, and though he wasn't very tall,
The size he gave in chunk and height, he doubled up in heart and might.
A boy of 12, with cheeky chat, who loved to wear a cowboy hat.

And when he stepped out on the field, his face was eyes and all gum-shield.
When monsters tore in like the wind, young Willy Murdoch - gleaming - grinned.
He'd muster up his mates, to pull them to the ground, like a wrestled bull.

Though he was only 12 years old, young Willy Murdoch broke the mould.
The boy made smiling into art, he lives forever in the heart.
The Pocket's rocket, quick and lean, Perpetually a sub-13.

We speak these words to start the day, but more than words - Will loved to play.
So Abergowrie, Ingham State and Gilroy men, we've marked the date,
Now play it tough boys, play it fair, defensive grit, attacking flair.

Now play with heart boys, play to win, now play and think of Willy's grin.
Now play with courage, play with pride, and feel his spirit in your side.

Awards Night

On Thursday 21st October we have our Awards Night to acknowledge and announce our outstanding Academic achievement of students. For me, this evening is the pinnacle of what we are about.

Meet our Principal Mr Kevin Barnes:

Deputy Principal

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College community,

As we settle in to Term 4, I find myself amazed at how quick the year is flying by. We have achieved many great things this year. This is a shortened term with lots still to do. We will be making use of every moment we have with our students until the end of the year.

I want to acknowledge and congratulate year 12 students on their attitude towards their mock exams in the last week of Term 3. The hard work has not gone unnoticed and will most certainly be beneficial as students near the ‘pointy end’ of their studies in preparation for external exams which commence on Friday 22 October. Important information regarding external exams was shared with students and their families earlier in the week and can also be found in this newsletter. I would like to also ensure that students who don’t have external exams make the most of this time too by taking up work experience opportunities, applying for jobs, preparing for interviews and gaining employment. There will be a grad week program shared with students by their Pastoral Leader - Paula Rand, so students can make arrangements accordingly.

Year 11 students will commence their block exams towards the end of Week 3. A timetable for scheduled exams will be released to students and families. This block is intended to help prepare year 11 students for their external exams the following year. If subject external exams will be assessing across 2 units next year, students will be assessed in the same way this year.

We have also been very busy with year 10 SET planning. This is a very important process in guiding students and their families with subject selections and career pathways for years 11 and 12 and beyond. I would like to thank Joan Devietti and Louise Costabeber who have held many of these interviews. I feel confident that our students and families are receiving pertinent and accurate advice. Thank you to the families who have already had their interviews and who have booked their interviews in coming weeks.

Information will be forthcoming shortly in regards to 2022 Year 9 elective selections. As discussed previously, this will be communicated via an online forum which we will be eager to hear your feedback about to assess if this medium is best.

In building news, we had an on-site meeting this week with the builder and architect. I am pleased to share that we are progressing well with this development. Our science classroom, 2 general learning classrooms and library/admin building are looking terrific and we are excited to be moving into these buildings in 2022. We have designed spaces that allow for modern and flexible learning and teaching. Our Library/Admin building will be named the Edmund Rice Centre and the classrooms will again become ‘M block’. This project has had its fair share of delays due to whether and Covid but the builders have been working tirelessly to keep us as on track as we can be.

Year 7 enrolments for next year are looking very positive. If you have not yet boked ur enrolment interview, please contact the front office to make a time.

God Bless

Herbert River Farmers’ League Scholarship Ingham for Year 12's

Assistant Principal Religious Education

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,

I hope you all have come back refreshed from the holidays and are ready for the term that lies ahead. It is an especially busy term which will no doubt fly like the rest. Year 12 have already started the countdown to the end of their secondary school days with great excitement and a little stress for their upcoming external exams. We wish them all the best.

On Tuesday 19 October, we are celebrating our whole-school Thanksgiving Mass. This Mass is an opportunity to give thanks for the year that was in our school community. It is also a chance to bless our year 12 students as they prepare for their external exams. We are also holding breakfast for our senior students on Wednesday morning, followed by a prayer service in the Chapel.

We are holding our St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal again this year. Year 12 homerooms have received their boxes and the remaining homerooms will get theirs in the coming weeks. Each year level has been allocated certain items that students will need to bring in to contribute to their Christmas box.

Year 7 – Pantry Goods e.g. biscuits, chips, jelly crystals, sugar, flour

Year 8 – Canned Goods e.g. soup, vegetables, lentils, beans, tuna

Year 9 – Breakfast Foods e.g. cereal, powdered milk, rolled oats, powdered eggs

Year 10 – Hygiene Products e.g. toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, soap

Year 11 – Packaged Goods e.g. pasta, pasta sauce, instant noodles, rice

Year 12 and staff – Christmas Foods e.g. fruit cake, custard powder, candy canes

Every little bit helps and goes a long way to helping those struggling at this time of the year.

Last weekend’s Gospel focussed on what was needed to enter the kingdom of heaven. It was explained that you need to do more than just follow the Ten Commandments. Being baptised a Christian means we are invited to live our lives to their full potential by sharing our gifts, talents and abilities with others. We are called to action; feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick and visiting the imprisoned. Helping those in need in any little way puts our faith into action.

This week’s prayer is for generosity. Have a good week.

God bless,

Christine Timms
Assistant Principal Religious Education

This year has been yet another awesome year for sport at Gilroy Santa Maria College. Mrs Erin Cerutti

Assistant Principal Pastoral Care

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,

I hope you were all able to relax a little over the break and spend some quality time together as a family. Once again Gilroy Staff and students ventured down to Forrest Beach for the last day of Term 3 for our Annual Fun Run. This year the length of the walk was reduced to make time for more events back at the park and make it a little bit more enjoyable for students. It was a great day, and we received a lot of positive feedback from students.

Rugby League Games

Over the past 2 weeks we have held two very memorable football games at the school to celebrate the life of a great young man ‘Will Murdoch’. On the first day back in Term 4, the Year 7 boys kitted up to play the Year 8 boys in a game of Rugby League. We also had most of our students and staff wearing their WM bucking bull caps in support of the event. It was a game I’m sure these boys and the whole school will never forget, the Year 7 boys fought hard and came away with the win.

On Wednesday 13 October, we hosted a U13’s carnival including Abergowrie College, Ingham State High School and Gilroy Santa Maria. It was a very special afternoon with a lot of Will’s family and close family friends coming along to watch. Gavin Cooper from the North Qld Cowboys also came up and refereed games and presented awards. The students from all 3 schools should be proud of how they all played, and it was a great carnival to watch. Will’s Gilroy classmates came away with the carnival taking out the Shield and Kelin Corradi from Gilroy received the player of the carnival trophy.

The way the whole community supported these events has really been moving and shows what a great, well respected and loved young man Will Murdoch was.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff from ISHS, Abergowrie and Gilroy who have put a lot of time in to help run this great carnival and make it such a memorable afternoon.

School TV

Just a reminder to check out our SchoolTV platform on the Gilroy website homepage. This is an integral part of a whole school approach to student wellbeing. It is available to our parents and families. Each topic or edition addresses key issues using brief interviews with expert specialists, fact sheets, parent quizzes, recommended apps, books and much more.

Industry Breakfast

On Tuesday 12 October, we held our first "Industry Breakfast" and welcomed our local business representatives for the morning.

Information was provided on:

  • Certificate courses and competencies being completed by students
  • Apprenticeship & Traineeship information
  • Industry standard facilities used by our students

Thank you to our wonderful students and Mrs Cassy Venturato for hosting this event.

We have a strong Vocational Education program at Gilroy and we realise the importance of relationships between school and industry.

Young Vinnies Cook up

The Young Vinnies students continue to ‘cook up’ as a way of supporting those people in our community who may need a ‘hand up’. Once a term the students get together to cook meals which are then donated to the Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre (HUB). These meals are distributed to those in our community who may be experiencing difficulties.

Our next cook up will be held on Friday 22 October from 3pm – 6pm.

THANK YOU to Saint Patricks Parish Women’s group for their generous donation to our Gilroy Cook up Club. This donation is very much appreciated and will allow us to buy ingredients and continue with this worthwhile venture.

THANK YOU also to Galipo’s Midtown Meats who have donated the meat that we use in our cooking. It is wonderful to have such great community support.

Brekky Club Update

Breakfast club has resumed for Term Four. Many of our GSM students look forward to breakfast each Wednesday morning before school and our numbers continue to increase. Last term, three of our Year 12 Hospitality students, Natalie, Zara and Laila, worked as volunteers to ensure the Breakfast Club ran smoothly. In Term Four our club will once again be supported by volunteers from our Year 11 Cohort. It is wonderful to see our students giving of their time to support these ventures. Thanks also to Sandra La Rosa and Louise Costabeber who regularly come along to assist. If you would like to contribute to our Breakfast Club, you are welcome to cook or bake (muffins, pancakes, pikelets etc …) or donate perishables such as butter, juice, eggs, bread. Please contact Rita Martin or Student Reception if you would like to contribute.

A big thank you to the Saint Patricks Women’s Group who so generously donated $200 towards supplies for our Breakfast Club. It is very much appreciated.

Thank you to Woolworth’s for their weekly donation of fruit and also to Mick’s Bakery.
