Mark Mappas Award - Trevor Nowak
The recipient of this year’s Mappas Medallion was Mr Trevor Nowak.
Trevor has been an invaluable member of the Gilroy P&F from 2016 to 2021 while his daughter, Tahlia, attended the College, which included two years as P&F President.
Trevor contributed to numerous fundraising initiatives, from organizing food stalls and supporting major school events to spearheading the purchase of a multifunction food van that provided students with a hands-on hospitality experience.
Trevor’s leadership has had a lasting impact, especially with the creation of a safe storage facility for P&F equipment and transitioning the organisation of the Ingham Catholic Debutante Ball to a major fundraiser for our school.
The P&F’s fundraising at various events allowed the P&F to support students in the following ways:
- the annual Forrest Beach Fun Run,
- Year 12 Portfolio Graduation gifts,
- Sports Awards gifts;
- as well as the purchase of a red carpet, bollards and curtaining to help decorate the Santa Maria Centre.
Trevor also oversaw the successful transfer of the organising and running of the Ingham Catholic Debutante Ball from the Ingham Catholic Parish to a subcommittee of the P&F in 2022. The annual event would become the P&F's major fundraiser.
Trevor’s legacy is one of commitment, community spirit, and generosity, and we thank him for all he has done to support our College.
Thank you and congratulations, Trevor.
Annual Awards Night 2024

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
As we are now into Week 4 of Term 4, it is a reminder that we are on the ‘home run’ for 2024, and we are determined to finish the year strongly. The dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm shown by our school community throughout the year has been truly inspiring, and this term will be no exception.
In recent weeks, we have had the privilege of acknowledging the outstanding achievements of our students through various celebrations. At our Sports Awards last Thursday, we celebrated our athletes who demonstrated excellence in their respective fields. Whether it was on the court, the track, or the field, our students have shown resilience, sportsmanship, and a commitment to their teams. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our College with pride and showcased their talents.
Equally important has been the recognition of academic success through our students' academic achievements. Awards Night highlights the determination and effort our students devote to their studies as they continually strive to improve. It has been a joy to see so many students achieving personal bests, excelling in their subjects, and embracing the love of learning.
The recent Leadership Handover Mass was a deeply emotional and significant event, where our outgoing student leaders gracefully passed on their roles and responsibilities to the newly elected members, who will lead our student body for the next twelve months. This symbolic moment marked not only the end of one chapter but also the beginning of another, as the new leaders took on the responsibility of guiding and inspiring our college in the coming year. It was a powerful reminder of the values of service, responsibility, and legacy that define our school's leadership tradition.
This week sees the start of external exams for our ATAR-eligible Year 12 students. This is a significant time for the Year 12 cohort, as these exams play a crucial role in determining their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), which influences their university and other post-secondary pathways.
The exams are scheduled to start on Monday 21 October and run through until Friday 8 November. Students have been provided with their individual exam timetables, and we encourage them to double-check dates, times, and locations to ensure a smooth experience on exam days.
I wish all Year 12 students the best of luck in their exams. We are proud of the dedication and resilience they have shown throughout the year and are confident they will perform to the best of their abilities.
The Townsville Catholic Education Office (TCEO) is undertaking a review of the current Student Academic Reporting Guidelines for students in Prep through to Year 10. TCEO is inviting parents and carers to complete a survey by Friday 25 October. I encourage all parents and carers to complete the survey to provide feedback on how our systems can improve. The letter and survey can be found below or by clicking on this link: Parent/Carers Survey
As we approach the final term of the school year, it is an ideal time to reflect on one of the most crucial factors contributing to a student’s success—regular school attendance. Research supports the notion that attending school consistently has a direct impact on academic achievement, social development, and overall well-being.
When students attend school regularly, they are more likely to stay engaged with their learning, build strong relationships with peers and teachers, and develop essential life skills like time management and responsibility and instills the importance of commitment, punctuality, and perseverance—qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Conversely, frequent absences from school can lead to gaps in learning, lower grades, and missed opportunities for personal growth. Even missing a few days here and there can make it harder for students to catch up, leading to added stress and a feeling of being left behind.
I encourage all families to prioritise regular school attendance and support our children in maintaining a strong connection to the College. Together, we can ensure that every student has the best chance to succeed and make the most of their educational journey
As we embark on Term 4, let’s continue to support each other and make the most of the remaining weeks of the school year. There's still much to achieve, and we look forward to celebrating more milestones together.
God bless
Kevin Barnes

Prayer
God of Wisdom,
I thank you for the knowledge gained
and the learning experiences of the year.
I come to you and ask you to illuminate my heart and mind.
Let your Holy Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams,
guiding my studies and giving me insight
so that I can perform to the best of my ability.
Grant me the strength to handle the pressure of these days,
the confidence to feel secure in my knowledge,
and the ability to keep a proper perspective through it all.
Help me to keep in mind what is truly important,
even as I focus my time and energy on these exams.
Finally, may I sense your peace
in knowing that I applied myself to the challenges of this day.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Assessment Planners
Assessment planners are valuable tools that help students manage their time effectively, prioritise tasks, and stay organised throughout the school year. By recording important dates such as assignments, homework, exams, assessments, and extracurricular activities, students can plan ahead and avoid last-minute cramming or missed due dates.
Sports
Gilroy Santa Maria College held its Annual Sports Awards ceremony on Thursday, 10 October. This event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the success of the students who have represented Gilroy Santa Maria College, Herbert River, North Queensland, and Queensland in school sport, and thank them for their contribution and hard work throughout the year.
This year we had some amazing achievements in sport, with Lacey Jayasuria and Nathan Venturato both breaking Interhouse and Interschool Athletics Carnival records. Gilroy also had a very successful year in representative sport, with over 50 students selected for Herbert River, 17 students representing North Queensland, and 2 students, Brandon Hamilton-Kaurila, and Millie-J Lino-Gofton (Merit Team) chosen to represent Queensland, in cricket and football respectively.

Emerging Leaders
Recently Gilroy's Emerging Leaders had an amazing day at the Emerging Leaders Mental Health and Wellbeing Roadshow!
The students, alongside Mr Dixon, Mrs Martin and Miss Shaq, all headed down to Townsville on Friday to attend the Roadshow at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium. The students were split into groups and participated in a range of activities. Following the activities, the students engaged in a dance battle with Ian Zaro and then headed out onto the field to do a TikTok with Ian and some activities with DIYDG (Deadly Inspiring Youth Doing Good).
As the event was coming to a close the students received a huge surprise from Jonathan Thurston, who sat and talked about how he came to be and the struggles and challenges he faced and how he was able to overcome them. The students were in awe.
It is safe to say that the students had a blast and cannot wait for next year's event.
Year 9 Geography Excursion
Students in Year 9 had the opportunity to explore the importance of sustainable tourism in the Hinchinbrook Region. They visited several key sites including the Kelly Theatre , Mercer Lane, Trebonne Fronton Courts, Forrest Beach, Five Mile Creek and the Carwell Range Lookout.
Through hands-on learning, they gained valuable insights into how tourism can thrive while protecting the environment and supporting local communities.
