Digital Honour Roll
The official opening of the Digital Honour Roll was timed to take place on the 10th of November 2018, coinciding with the 100 Year Anniversary of the World War I armistice the following day.
The World War I Link Project involves a research group working to put a face and a story to the 39 Ingham Honour Roll Soldiers from WWI. Over the course of the past year, twelve Yr 9 students have been working with Mrs Squires, Mrs Costabeber and Ms Dunn during lunchtimes, after school and on Saturdays to uncover information about the soldiers.
The Project was a combined effort, with funding from the Queensland State Government, Hinchinbrook Shire Council, 31 RQR Battalion Association and the Rotary Club of Hinchinbrook. The funding is going towards the purchase of an interactive touchscreen to create a Digital Honour Roll that will be housed in the Kennedy Regiment Museum within the Hinchinbrook Shire Library. The Digital Honour Roll will include information, photos and sources on all the soldiers.
The students involved are: Kacey Lynch, Amy Milanovic, Tahlia Nowak, Samuel Di Bartolo, Isabella Melara, Chiara Fankhauser, Rebecca Jensen, Tristan Barbagallo, Trenyce Pearce, Sara Firth, Britney Romano and Lauren Watt.
Australian Indigenous Football Championships
Congratulations to Trenyce Pearce who played for NQ Brolgas at the Australian Indigenous Football Championships in Logan recently. NQ Brolgas made the Grand Finals against Ladu, going down 3-0.
Out of 12 teams, Brolgas came 2nd. What a wonderful accomplishment. Well done Trenyce on making the team.
Nick Dametto MP and Yr 11
Nick Dametto visited Mr Matthews English Communications class and discussed Tourism in the Hinchinbrook area. The students were delighted to hear Nick’s ideas and plans to bring more tourism to the beautiful Hinchinbrook Shire.
Surreal Meal 2018
Congratulations to the Arts Department on another outstanding Surreal Meal. A MAD night was had by all.
Principal
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community
Congratulations to all students who received awards at our Gilroy Awards Evening two weeks ago. It was a great night which recognised the efforts and achievements of our students and I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the evening. Apart from acknowledging the tremendous efforts of our students we farewelled long serving staff member Mrs Randi Pietrobon who was our special guest on the night. Randi has been teaching at Gilroy since 1988 and has displayed outstanding service to our school community. Randi along with other experienced staff has set the tone and expectations for the college for many years and leaves a great legacy.
While we are farewelling our staff, I’d also like to acknowledge the excellent service of three other staff members who will be leaving us at the end of the year. Firstly, thank you to Carina Venturato who is relocating to St Anthony’s Catholic college in Townsville. Also leaving us temporarily is Peter Groundwater who has been seconded to St Theresa’s Abergowrie for 2019 and David Price who taken a position in Brisbane for next year. On behalf of the school community I wish both Carina, Peter and David all the best and thank them for their service to our community.
We have some new staff joining our community in 2019. Welcome to Ms Paula Rand who joins our Maths Department. Paula is an experienced teacher with an excellent reputation as an outstanding educator in our district. We also welcome back Mrs Karen Lahtinen from maternity leave who will be replacing Peter Groundwater as Acting Assistant Principal (Pastoral) for 2019. We still have some positions to fill and I will inform our community as these are finalised.
Recently, our 2019 College Captains, Prefects and House Captains were selected. Congratulations to:
College Captains: Eliza Carr
and Mary Galletly
Prefects: Will Hardy, Ava Stanford and Zara
Nicoll
O'Meara House Captains: Ryan Rossington and
Rachel Morelli
McAuley House Captains: Alana Romano and Akema
Greenaway
Rice House Captains: Andrew Finocchiaro and
Rachel Torrisi
It was great to see so many students have a go and it is a great sign that so many feel they can put their hand up for positions without the fear of others might think. Congratulations to all our student leaders for 2019, I am confident they will do an excellent job.
Finally, and not least, this Friday our Yr 12 students graduate from school. They have been a terrific group of students with untapped potential both individually and collectively. On behalf of our college community I wish them all the best as they celebrate the milestone of finishing school and ultimately as they make their way in the world. We trust they will have fond memories of Gilroy, their teachers and classmates, remembering they will always be members of our college family. I thank their Coordinator Ms Carina Venturato for the organisation of end of school events recently. I’d also like to thank the staff and parents who have assisted in organising the Graduation this Friday night. It promises to be a great night.
God Bless

AWARDS NIGHT
Two weeks ago, we witnessed the cumulation of a year’s hard academic work at Awards Night. Congratulations to all recipients for a job well done and for receiving a just reward for your consistent effort and dedication to your studies. I am always particularly proud of the Academic Effort and Industry recipients. To have worked to the very best of their ability is all that we can ask of any student. In my opinion this award is the most special and the one that all students should aim to achieve.
Yr 12
Our Yr 12 students are nearing the end of their secondary education with Friday 16 November their last day. As the Yr 12 stand on the threshold of the end of one journey and the beginning of another, it is a timely reminder of the many life-long lessons that form part of our school culture – a culture which promotes strong values and goes well beyond the curriculum and assessments. Seneca, an ancient Roman philosopher once said, “As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.” We sincerely try to instil in our students the importance of being a good person and that this is achieved by having a strongly developed sense of empathy. Empathy requires us to put ourselves in the shoes of others and walk with them for a while. It also requires that we question our own assumptions and challenge the assumptions of others, so that we are less likely to be caught up in the intolerance of other people.
The Yr 12 cohort are a respectful and fun-loving group of students who have many talents however opportunities can only take them so far in life. It’s the other qualities of passion, perseverance, commitment, determination and sheer hard work that will take them the rest of the way to achieve their dreams. I congratulate them on achieving their Queensland Certificate of Education. I sincerely wish them well and pray that God will guide and protect them through the next stage of their life journey.
This week, all students received a copy of their final results for checking. On Friday, starting at 10:00am, the college farewell will be held. Morning Tea for the Yr 12 students and their families will follow in the Function room.

All invited students and staff enjoyed the evening which was certainly a lot of fun. Thank you to Mrs Pietrobon and Miss Cerqui who obviously went to enormous effort for students to enjoy a night of fun.
World War 1
Congratulations to Mrs Amy Squires, Ms Sarah Dunn, Mrs Louise Costabeber and the Yr 9 students who worked tirelessly and endlessly for 2 years on the extraordinary Hinchinbrook Shire Digital Honour Roll Project. From the Assistant Principal (Religious Education)
Last Sunday we celebrated our final Youth Mass for the year. As the year has progressed it seemed that the masses grew, not only in attendance, but also in thankfulness. Thankfulness for the wonderful youth in our local catholic schools, the talents of our sensational band and choir members and the opportunity to come together, to grow in faith and community and be a part of these wonderful experiences. We are certainly looking forward to continuing these masses in 2019.
Where has 2018 gone? Sitting here finalising lessons, assessments and masses for the end of the year it is impossible not to look back and consider the many blessings that have been bestowed upon our students, staff, families and school community. Our Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday was a beautiful celebration which gave us the opportunity to give thanks to God for the many good things that have come our way this year.
This week we farewell our Yr 12 students as they embark on the next stage of their lives. It brings more tears as a think about farewelling another member of my family who has reached this milestone. Tonight, will be the Yr 12 Graduation Mass at St Patrick’s Church at 7:00pm. Everyone is welcome to join us for the celebration and look forward to seeing you there.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Yr 12 students the very best for their futures. May they be happy in all their endeavours and may God keep them safe.
God Bless
Christine Timms
Assistant Principal (Pastoral Care)
On the weekend my wife asked me what we had coming up this week at school. This week we have Rugby Union on Monday, Indigenous Awards on Tuesday, a Parents and Friends dinner on Wednesday, the Yr 12 Graduation Mass on Thursday and then the Graduation dinner on Friday evening. To say that these are busy times that we live in is definitely an understatement. Yet, we are all in the same boat, paddling along frantically against the current of life that is constantly confronting us. I read recently that the idea of finding a work/life balance is something that is almost impossible to achieve. What the article suggested instead was to find a work/life system that allowed both aspects to operate with each other, where your family could be included as a big part of the career that you choose. I wondered how this could be achieved in all career paths. While I can sometimes see how it could work for me as a teacher, I struggle to find how a tradesperson could possibly achieve this state of life. Work cannot be the sole purpose of our lives, yet it is the area of our existence that consumes the most energy, the most time and certainly the most commitment if we are to survive as independent members of society. This said, without a meaningful life outside of our careers, everything that we do can often seem pointless. We must work hard to invest time into our families, our passions in life and our acts of service towards others. Without these components of our lives, work will only ever be a means by which we earn our living.
As the Yr 12’s begin the next part of their journey in life, I encourage all of our wonderful graduates to remember that life is not all about work and the status that comes with the choice of a particular career. Life is about ensuring that you realise the importance of investing time and love into those around you and making sure that we do not forget about those who have helped in your journey throughout the last 12 years or more. As you make your way through this very busy week, I encourage all our Yr 12’s to seek out their loved ones, their teachers, their classmates and thank them for the massive role that they have played in your life. I would also remind you to never get too caught up in the importance of your future careers and to always remember the joy you have had in acknowledging your family’s contributions towards your life. Good luck Yr 12s and long live your dreams.
Blessings
Peter Groundwater

The Meaning of Career
There are generally two things people mean when they use the word career. Although the two meanings are related to one another, there are substantial differences between them.
Career Definition 1: A Synonym for Occupation
We often use the word ‘career’ as a synonym for occupation, trade, profession, or vocation. This definition refers to what a person does to earn a living. There are thousands of careers. They range from those that require extensive education and training to others for which you need hardly any preparation. Examples of careers are engineer, carpenter, doctor, veterinary nurse, cahier, teacher, and hairstylist. Click on the blue hyperlinked words to explore these options.
Career Definition 2: A Series of Jobs or a Career Path
The second meaning is much more complicated. It concerns an individual’s progression through a series of jobs over his or her lifetime and includes that person's education and unpaid work experiences, such as internships and volunteer opportunities.
When it is defined in this context, it covers everything related to career development including career choice and advancement. Your career can take a variety of paths. Next, we'll examine three possibilities.
Career Paths: Which One Will You Take?
You may find yourself on one of these three career paths. The first involves a string of entirely unrelated jobs; the second, a series of increasingly responsible positions that are related to one another; and finally, the third, a path filled with different jobs in the same industry, each, possibly, with more responsibility than the one before it.
- Path 1: Your career might be made up of a series of random jobs that are unrelated to one another. For example, you may first work as a cashier in a grocery store, then as a server in a restaurant, and next as a child care assistant. With such disparate occupations in your work history, it is impossible to predict what your next job will be. These careers don't have a lot in common, so your experience in one position will rarely lead you to a subsequent one that pays more, or carries with it, more responsibilities.
- Path 2: The second path involves moving up within the same occupation. If you continue to work as a cashier, whether in different establishments or the same one, your experience will grow. Doing this will allow you to move up the ranks in the same organisation or get better jobs in others. Perhaps you will be promoted to a position at the customer service desk. Eventually, you may be eligible for a job that involves supervising other cashiers. As you move into increasingly responsible positions, your salary should go up as well.
- Path 3: The third scenario has you moving up the corporate ladder through a variety of positions in the same industry, but not in the same occupation. If your ultimate goal is to become a retail store manager, for example, begin your career as a cashier. With your experience in the retail industry, you may next qualify for a job as a salesperson. After gaining more experience, you may become an assistant department manager, then a department manager, an assistant store manager, and maybe eventually a store or district manager.
Explore the immense variety of occupations available through the Australian Government website, JobOutlook.gov.au:

Options for tertiary learning are equally vast, and these websites can be used to explore your available options:
