Yr 8 Sport
It’s been a massive Term 4 at Gilroy this year. All three Yr 8 HPE classes teamed up and have been playing in a major Premier League Football competition. Players have given their all and left nothing in the tank as they battled it out in the gruelling NQ heat. Coaches Mr Schifilliti, Miss Castellaro and Mr Schrodter have been pushing their teams to the limit and have been proud of the student’s achievements and increased skill acquisition. However, there can only be one winner and after 7 weeks of competition, this year it was the White Team consisting of; Harry Hardy, Wil Hunter, Deegan Mancinelli, Uwen Putzka, Laura Poggio, Indianna Beaumont-Auld and Helena Scobie.
Many thanks must go out to Gilroy’s Graphics department staff who spent many hours designing and creating medals for the event. We are sure the students will go on to treasure these for life.
Thank you to everyone who participated from the HPE Department.
Lost Property
The Lost Property Basket in Student Reception is overflowing. Please have your child check for anything missing. Any items left, will be sent to St Vinnies.
Principal
Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community
This Tuesday 4 December, we host Yr 6 students from throughout the district at our Orientation Day. It is a whole day session beginning at 8:30am and concluding at 3:00pm. Students will meet their teachers; complete team-building activities hosted by our Yr 10 Peer Leaders and generally learn more about how our school functions and what they can expect. If you have any queries, please contact the office.
Next year we complete one of our information technology goals of ensuring all students will have their own technology device. Instead of spending money on maintaining numerous computer labs within the school we instead made the decision to put a device in the hands of every student. As all our school buildings have wi-fi, it means this a much more flexible model and will ensure our students have access to latest information and education software in a range of subject areas. Our 1:1 technology device program in summary is as follows, our Yr 7 will have their own Chromebook for use while at school. Our Yr 8 and 9’s will also have their own Chromebook but will be allowed to take this home to work on homework and assessment items. Our Yr 10, 11 and 12’s will be given a new laptop at the beginning of Yr 10. This laptop will be allowed to be used at school and at home by students but importantly, it is theirs to keep at the end of Yr 12. They are a quality machine and providing students look after these devices from the beginning they will get good use of them after school.
Aligned to our 1:1 student device program, we will be issuing all Yr 8, 9 and 10 students with a college computer bag next year. The bag will protect both Chromebooks and laptops through their schooling at Gilroy. The bag is a knapsack design and students will also be able to carry their books in it. It will save students needing two separate bags to transport their Chromebooks/laptops and their books to and from school. Therefore, as I have mentioned to the students recently, parents and carers of 2019 Yr 8, 9 and 10 students please do not purchase a school bag as one will be given to the students on the first day of school next year. The only task for parents will be getting some form of identification placed on the bag as they all will look the same. We recommend embroidery, but you may use some sort of tag or other labelling.
The recent Graduation events were all wonderful ways to farewell our “Senior Class of 2018”. The Thanksgiving Mass, Farewell Assembly and Graduation Evening itself were all special and emotional events. Our seniors were in great spirits and were excited about taking those next steps into the big wide world. The hall at the Graduation was decorated spectacularly and it was obvious that much work had gone into preparing such a wonderful night. Either to our many parents, staff and students who assisted before, on or after the night please accept our community’s appreciation.
Our seniors can also be proud that they all graduated with a QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education). This is the sixth year in a row our college has achieved this goal.
As this is our last newsletter for the year, I take time to thank the staff, students and parents for all your efforts and support this year. We have achieved many things during this school year and next year promises to be another great one with the New QCE System beginning for our Yr 11’s and many projects taking shape. We will return with our refurbished Multipurpose Hall completed. It’s looking amazing and we look forward to using it for our Beginning of Year School Mass in February 2019.
Our office closes on Friday 14 December and reopens on Monday 14 January 2019 with school resuming on Tuesday 29 January for all year levels.
Please have a safe, happy and Holy Christmas. To all families and staff leaving our College community we wish all the best.
God Bless
John Nuttall

The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy
On 31 October 2018, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Minister for Small and Family Business, Skills and Vocational Education, announced a trial apprentice wage subsidy to support regional and rural businesses.
From 1 January 2019, the Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy will support apprenticeships in skills need occupations in rural and regional areas and encourage participation in apprenticeships.
The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy is available to employers who sign-up and commence a new worker Australian Apprentice from 1 January 2019 and until 1630 sign-ups have occurred.
Employers who employ a new worker Australian Apprentice undertaking a full-time Certificate III or IV qualification that leads to an occupation listed on the National Skills Needs List in a rural and regional workplace may be eligible. The Australian Apprentice must be employed under the relevant Award (modern award) for their occupation.
The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy provides support in the first three years of an Australian Apprenticeship as follows:
- 75 per cent of the first year award wage;
- 50 per cent of the second year award wage;
- 25 per cent of the third year award wage.
The Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy is in addition to the suite of employer incentives available under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.
Mrs Douglas will continue to email out employment opportunities and is happy to receive emails across the holiday break.
