Graphics

Recently the Yr 9 Graphic students were given a design assignment where they had to produce a personalised keyring that would help them easily identify their school bag. Students followed a design process and after brainstorming and sketching ideas, each student drew their designs on Autodesk Inventor. From there, students then printed these on 3D printers and painted them. The class should be commended on their efforts.

The Food Technology Department

What better way than to spend our Monday rainy morning making fresh warm pasta! Our Yr 9 class has travelled back to Italy and have done all the Nonnas out there proud, with their handmade pastas. They were all very excited to taste their creations.

Principal

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community

Yesterday we conducted our annual “Gilroy on Show”. This was our chance to showcase the wonderful educational programs and facilities we have at Gilroy Santa Maria. It was very well attended by new families, representatives from local business and many of our existing families. Visitors enjoyed a variety of displays and demonstrations, enjoyed the entertainment of our talented students and the wonderful food prepared by our students and staff. The new Santa Maria Centre was a feature of our guided tours, even though we still have some finishing touches to go I know it impressed many people who can see the great benefit it will provide for many years to come.

Recently our Catholic Debutante Ball was conducted, and it was a terrific night. There were nearly thirty debutants from our district; each one looked beautiful along with their handsome partners. Their dancing was exceptional, and it was obvious they were very well prepared. The feature for me was that they were obviously enjoying themselves. They sung along and danced nearly all night with family and friends joining in great numbers. Congratulations to the Ball Committee, the hall looked terrific, catering was great, and it all seemed go off without a hitch. A big thanks to our very own Gilroy Parents and Friends Committee who organised and ran the bar and table service. The committee and volunteers did a wonderful job. Thanks for your generosity.

Last week I attended an Edutech Conference in Sydney. I was particularly interested in the educational building, equipment and furniture component of the conference. As you know, we are very much in the middle of building new facilities and I was keen to be see all the new and exciting educational ideas. Educational trends and programs are constantly changing. The Queensland Curriculum Assessment Authority (QCAA) identifies our young Queenslanders in the 21st century will need to be innovators, entrepreneurs, lifelong learners and responsible global citizens. The QCAA have identified the following skills that our students will need:

  • critical thinking
  • creative thinking
  • communication
  • collaboration and teamwork
  • personal and social skills
  • ICT skills.

If our Gilroy students are to fully develop these skills, we need to ensure that our teaching promotes these skills and therefore ensure we have modern facilities and equipment that supports this teaching and learning. We are in a great position with our new buildings to provide some engaging and flexible spaces for our teachers and students.

God Bless

Hello everyone,

YR 6 TRANSITION PROGRAM

The second Transition Day for Yr 6 students was held last Thursday. It was great to see a large group of very excited and keen students eager to experience life as a student at Gilroy. Students were exposed to the specialist areas of Food Technology, Design Technology, Science and Art. The next Transition Day is next term 25 July.

TERM 2 EXAMS

As we look towards the end of term, all students should be preparing for exams. The exam schedule has been emailed to all students and parents and is also visible on COMPASS in student schedules. Students are asked to ensure they check over this exam schedule so that they are aware of where and when their exams will be. Please ensure your son/daughter is very clear about their upcoming exams. All students are required to sit their exams unless they present a medical certificate to the office prior to or on return to school. As per the school's assessment procedures, exams cannot be conducted beforehand so please ensure your child is at school for all assessment. If your child is absent for any reason please notify the office by 8:30am. Students in Yrs 7 to 10 and Yr 12 will receive Semester One Report Cards in Week 2 Term 3. Yr 11 will receive Unit 1 Report Cards at this time also. Yr 12 OP eligible students will also sit past QCS papers on Friday 28 June. This experience is vital preparation for the actual QCS Test in September. The papers will be corrected by external markers and students will receive feedback on how they can improve their performance.

CAREERS

Thank you to Mrs Douglas who organized Yrs 9 & 10 and Yrs 11 & 12 to attend the Hinchinbrook Shire Council “Find your Future in Hinchinbrook”. From all reports, students took advantage of the opportunity to speak to possible employers and gain valuable knowledge about different career pathways. Students in Yr 10 will all be undertaking work experience for three days, 26 - 28 June. Whilst some students have been organised in returning their forms there are still a few outstanding. Students in Yrs 11 & 12 who undertake work placement should also be organizing their placement for Term 3. In the past, work placement has definitely played an integral part in the success of students gaining employment. To ensure students are able to gain meaningful placement, the organization and returning of the necessary paperwork needs to be completed as soon as possible. If your child has not yet returned their form to student reception, please ensure they do so.

In Yr 10, students must develop a senior education and training (SET) plan.

The purpose of a SET plan is to help students:

  • set and achieve their learning goals in Yrs 11 and 12
  • include flexible and coordinated pathway options in their course of senior study
  • think about their education, training and career options after Yr 12 and make decisions about their learning pathways
  • structure their learning around their abilities, interests and ambitions
  • communicate with their parents, teachers and career guidance officers about their learning pathways and post-school plans.

Next term Yr 10 students will begin selecting their senior subjects and continue working on their SET plan.

As I stated in previous newsletters, the New QCE System demands that students are very aware of certain verbs called Cognitive Verbs. Teachers will use these verbs in their teaching and assessment for all subjects across all grades. It is vital that students understand what the verb is asking them to do in order to answer the question correctly. All verbs and their definition are in the school diary and on the walls of each classroom. The cognitive verb for this newsletter is JUSTIFY, please use this link to get to the poster.

JUSTIFY

Of particular interest is the suggested “sentence starters” which students may find useful.

From the Assistant Principal
(Religious Education)

On Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost, which marks the birthday of the Church. It also marks the end the season of Easter taking place fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus. Pentecost is celebrated as the coming of the Spirit, promised by Jesus that gave courage and strength to the disciples to spread the Gospel of Jesus. Through their daring and selfless efforts, the Church has become what it is today.

The works of the Holy Spirit in our lives produce good fruit. The world in which we live see us as followers of Jesus by the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which are visible in our actions. These fruits are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control and Kindness. Let us be inspired by the spirit and continue to show a good example by identifying the fruits that we need to develop and show these in our everyday lives to those around us.

God Bless

Gilroy on Show:

We were absolutely delighted to present our “Gilroy On Show” evening Thursday 13 June from 3:30pm to 6:00pm. We had loads of things to see and do on the night ranging from trying your hand at the CO2 racer in the Trade Training Centre to the displays in our new Santa Maria Centre and of course our ‘pig on the spit’ and other culinary delights from the hospitality students. Several groups of Business students also had fundraising goodies available to purchase on the night.

Indigenous Report:

Thank you to all of the staff, students and families who helped organise and attend our Gilroy Santa Maria College Reconciliation Week Liturgy last Wednesday. It was truly a beautiful occasion featuring didgeridoo playing, the presentation of Indigenous painted crosses to each of our Student Representative Council (SRC) members to hang in each homeroom, and the unveiling of our College Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

For me, reconciliation is about strengthening the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians. It is with this vision that we strive to move towards in our college community.

Congratulations also to the following students for receiving a Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) QCE Scholarship. Students were presented their awards at Assembly this week.

  • Stevie Barrett
  • Aramai Cassady
  • Kylie Strik
  • Madison Greenaway

Sports News

Cross Country

On Tuesday 28 May, 19 of our very own Gilroy Santa Maria students headed to Bicentennial Park in Townsville to take part in the Northern Secondary Schools Cross Country Trials. All of our students gave an excellent account of themselves on the day with not only their efforts and determination to run their best possible race, but also the excellent behaviour they displayed while representing themselves and our schools. Though all students can be proud of their efforts on the day, a special mention must go to Kate Butcher and Brayden Spina for finishing in the top 10 in their age group.

Northern Regional Under 12 Soccer Trials

On 26 & 27 May, boys and girls in the Under 12 Yrs age group were involved in the Northern Region Secondary Schools Soccer Trials. These trials were held in the Burdekin and while all the boys and girls that played in these trials toiled hard, two players were particularly outstanding on the day. Brayden Spina and Lucy Biviano were both selected to represent the Northern Region Under 12 boys and girls soccer team at the Queensland Secondary Schools Under 12 Soccer Trials to be held in July. Well done Brayden and Lucy.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival

With our Interhouse Athletics Carnival to be held on Wednesday and Friday 7 & 9 August (Week 4, Term 3) our Gilroy Santa Maria students should start training for pre carnival events, such as the 400m, 800m and 1500m running. These are held during HPE subject time and lunch breaks to allow enough time for all other athletic events to run on the days set aside for our Interhouse Athletics Carnival.

Vicki Wilson Cup

The first 2 rounds of the Vicki Wilson Cup Competition were recently held. The GSM Open Team convincingly won the first game; however, game two was a nail biter, going to Ingham State High School. The girls played very well with excellent defence along with accurate shooting proving to be the key to their success. A special mention goes to Akema Greenaway, Maddi Greenaway and Alicia Galipo who played exceptionally well during these games. Congratulations girls!
