From the Acting Principal

Dear Gilroy Santa Maria College Community,

I write my newsletter article as our Acting Principal this week. I will be in this role until October 16, 2020 when John returns from his secondment at Townsville Catholic Education. I am very excited for this role and look forward to leading our College along with our great Administration and Teaching teams.

Earlier this week, Semester 1 Reports both became available on Compass and printed copies mailed home. As per last year, reports will include both a grade for behaviour and effort as well as a result for different subjects. Across the College, the majority of our students have been working industriously, even through the events associated with COVID-19. Although I have said this previously, I again would like to congratulate those students who have worked hard, attended academic support and tried their best. Well done. For students receiving results that they may be disappointed with, I hope they take this opportunity to reflect on their efforts and commitment to their studies and how this may improve going forward. As always, we have a dedicated and committed staff who want to help our students achieve their potential. We have a free academic support program offered both during lunchtimes and after school as one avenue students may decide to commit to help improve their studies.

Last Thursday we were able to have our first Yr 6 Transition morning at the College. It was lovely to see so many beautiful new, smiling faces. We had a great attendance, with 67 year 6 students attending. It was nice to see students from many of our primary schools throughout the district. Students had a chance to experience different aspects of the year 7 curriculum as well as getting to know each other. College packs were sent home with students that contained both some souvenirs for students as well as enrolment information and a letter outlining future 2020 events for year 6 students and families. A copy of this letter is also attached below.

Importantly, due to COVID-19 we were unable to hold our annual ‘Gilroy on Show’ event for our family and friends, and given that we are now into the cane season, we have merged this event with our 2021 Yr 7 Information Evening which will be held on Thursday 10 September. As part of this evening, both parents/caregivers and students will be offered tours of our beautiful grounds and facilities as well as some hands-on experience in some of our facilities. The evening will also consist of a presentation by the College which will provide some important information for students enrolling into year 7 next year. More information will be forthcoming.

Our next Year 6 transition morning will be on Thursday 6 August from 8:30am - 11:30am.

It is great to be able to again come together as a College for our whole school assemblies. This week we were able to celebrate prayer and student achievements through the running club and students who competed in the Italian speaking competition earlier this year. It is lovely to see students’ smiling faces as they accept their awards for their extra-curricular achievements.

Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This is an opportunity for all Catholic Schools to celebrate and promote their distinct mission and ethos. College representatives will again attend our Catholic Education Mass to be held in Townsville. On the same day, we will also be celebrating the College’s 2020 Deus Caritas Est Christian Living Award who will be awarded to one of our Year 12 students, Emily Firth. This award is given to someone who espouses a lived commitment to Christian living. Congratulations Emily.

Next Wednesday afternoon and Friday will be our annual Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Students are able to wear their house shirts on both days. This is always a great day for everyone and an opportunity for students to get involved, even if it’s in the spirit of collegiality for their sporting house. Due to COVID-19; however, we will not be having an Interschool Athletics Carnival this year.

As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or email. I hope that everyone has a great term.

God Bless,
Melissa Carr
Acting Principal

Hospitality

This week, our students have settled in very well into the new hospitality centre. Year 12 have been busy making butter chicken and vanilla slice, Year 8 students made a delicious chicken stirfry and Year 9 have made warm Apple turnovers.

Assistant Principal (Religious Education)

Welcome back to Term 3.

It has been a glorious start to the term. The weather, though slightly cooler, has been a wonder and has given students the opportunity to take advantage of the sunshine and use our wonderful oval to catchup with friends and keep warm.

With the start of the term I am happy to announce that we will be starting class masses again. With the easing of COVID restrictions, it will now be possible to gather in our year levels to celebrate mass with our parish priests.

Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This year we are celebrating the 175th year anniversary of the first Catholic school opening in Queensland and the theme is ‘A Spirit Tomorrow’. One of the many highlights of CEW is the presentation of the Deus Caritas Est Award. This is presented to a secondary student from each Catholic school in the diocese. The award is inspired by the encyclical ‘Deus Caritas Est’ meaning ‘God is Love’ and recognises loving service lived out by faith conviction. This year’s College awardee is Emily Firth. Emily will travel to Townsville with her parents on Monday to receive this award from Bishop Tim at the Catholic Education Week Mass in Townsville. Congratulations Emily on your nomination and your continued work for our school and the parish community.

Emily Firth

The second meeting of Bishop Tim’s Youth Forum will also be held on Monday. Isabella Melara, Robert Giuliano and Michael Russo will be travelling to Townsville to meet with other secondary students from our Catholic schools. The purpose of the forum is to engage with a range of students across the diocese and discuss how the local Church can be more youth focussed. I look forward to listening to their conversations.

This week’s prayer is a centred around Catholic Education Week…

God of our journey,
You call us to be disciples to all nations.
Guided by the Spirit,
help us to always have Christ’s mission
of love, mercy, peace and justice
at the forefront of our minds
as we share the Good News
of the Risen Jesus with others.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

God Bless
Christine Timms

Inter-house Athletics

A reminder to all students that have nominated for athletic events in our upcoming Inter-house Athletics carnival, that training should be well and truly underway. Our Inter-house athletics carnival will commence on Wednesday 29 July and conclude on Friday 31 July (Week 3).

Best of luck to McAuley, Rice and O’Meara houses for this event!

NQ SPORTS NOTICES

There is a new school sport calendar (COVID reboot) which is now on the sports noticeboard and also available below. Some NQ sports were cancelled but some are re-scheduled, so please keep an eye out for any NQ trials in the near future.

There were also a couple of teams chosen before COVID that will still go to the State Championships. Check the new calendar for more information below.

Golf 10 -19 yrs- Students keen to trial for NQ Golf (paper trial) should come to student reception for a form. The form needs to be filled in and returned to Mr Mendiolea or student reception by THIS Friday.

Basketball 13-15 yrs - Students keen to trial for NQ Basketball should come to student reception for a form. The form needs to be filled in and returned to Mr Mendiolea or student reception by THIS Friday.

Barnes Cup News

Given the uncertainties and restrictions around large gatherings and NQ Region cancelling regional athletics trials, we have decided to not go ahead with the Barnes’ Cup this year.

Whenever we hold this event next, it will still be the 100th time the event has been run and will still be a major event.

In discussions with the Barnes family, there is agreement around these concerns, along with timelines and concerns about asking too much of our community businesses when they have all been hit financially.

We look forward to re-scheduling the 100th Barnes’ Cup in 2021.
